Robin Jarossi

Welcome…

I'm a skilled freelance sub/chief sub and writer, with a wealth of experience on national newspapers and major magazines. I work regularly at Mirror publications, Dennis Publishing and others, and I'm available for fresh freelance projects. I quickly acclimatise to new office environments and produce lively, accurate content on deadline. I've worked in consumer and contract publishing, on business titles, one-off publications, iPad editions and brochures.

Subbing and production

  • Chief sub I regularly cover for the chief sub on the Mirror's Saturday magazine We Love TV. In addition to sharpening copy and ensuring accuracy, skill and creativity are required to produce eye-catching headlines and cover lines
  • Production I sub pages for Dennis Publishing's Computeractive, a consumer magazine aimed at the average user of PCs, tablets and smartphones. Eliminating jargon and ensuring features are sharply written and authoritative are key requirements. I also cover for the production editor and supervise flatplans, page flow, press pass and freelance subbing
  • Sub I have subbed features at Metro, dealing with stories on travel, technology, celebrities, books, films and TV. I learned a lot here about working with speed, accuracy and a light touch
  • Sub Working at Hello! requires a great deal of fact checking and digging. I have worked there for several years and acquired a lot of experience in chasing facts and crafting flowing, highly topical features. I was also chief sub and writer on the Hello! Christmas Special
  • Digital editing I spent a year doing night shifts at the Daily Mail to work on Mail Plus, their iPad edition of the daily paper. As news, business and feature pages went to press, we re-edited and formatted them for iPad subscribers, offering sometimes more in-depth coverage with added functionality (panoramic video, maps, additional content). The job required the ability to work skilfully under pressure to produce a top-class digital product

Editor

The Clipper

I devised the editorial pitch for this customer magazine. A glossy travel companion, it was placed in the cabins of travellers with the luxury line Star Clipper Cruises. I commissioned the editor of Yachting Monthly to write for us, and the travel editor of the Sunday Times to write a guide to the destination ports. It also carried fashion features, seafaring book recommendations and food guides. The content included translations of the English text into French and German.

Zap

One of six magazines that I that launched or edited while at Scorpio Multimedia (which published magazines and websites for the cable TV industry and clients). Zap, published on behalf of Telewest, was the UK’s first guide to on-demand TV – shopping, banking, travelling, TV viewing. The title was popular because it carried comprehensive listings for a complex service and featured high-quality articles. I also commissioned specials in collaboration with the likes of Cartoon Network, with whom I negotiated exclusive artwork for a trio of linked covers.
